The Garden Frog with C Renee on Jan 09, 2016Yes and no. DIY for any natural stone product is time consuming and somewhat scary. Natural products such as marble, travertine, and granite need to be sealed every year and cleaned without acidic, bleach, or abrasive cleansers. Truth be told all you ever need to do is wipe down your natural stone countertops with a clean wet rag because stone does not harbor bacteria like other materials. Even a glass of juice spilled and not wiped up immediately can etch into the stone. I am not sure if you have any kitchen and granite places near you but I would first start there with their product recommendations for cleaning the marble and they may even hire out to repolish and seal your marble at a decent price. If not, then you will need several grits/types of sandpaper for sanding the piece smooth. This will take you many hours because you will start with the lowest grit and sand opening up the pores of the stone and then you will have to sand with several grits until you get to a fine grit (like 200) to close up the pores and make it smooth. I am a DIYer who has tackled many projects in my time and this is one I paid to have done on 2 pieces of granite I bought for my island and cooktop area in my kitchen. Sealing your stone countertops is a must and I know this because I failed to do this on a regular basis and my granite has suffered. I would watch youtube videos. at least 4 or 5 of different people to get a feel for what each person does. just google refinishing marble countertop and go from there. But do not forget to go talk to a professional because the price may not be as high as you think after you buy all the necessary products and spend the hours of time trying to refinish the countertops yourself. good luckHelpful Reply

The 2 Seasons on Jan 09, 2016The man who installed our marble can also sand them down, get rid of stains, and seal them. He got grape juice out of one of his customer's marble. There might be this type of person in your area. When we had our Cararra marble installed, we had a five-year sealer put on. It has still etched but has not stained. You must expect etching with marble. This year is the fifth year, so we will have him come back and reseal them. We Americans are hung up on perfect counter tops. The Europeans embrace their imperfect marble counter tops. They think it's a sign of a good cook!Helpful Reply
