Kitchen counter protect vs. paint

My kitchen has a very pale countertop. We are avid tea drinkers and my hubby is an avid tea/coffee spiller! Unfortunately, this habit is continuously staining the counter. I was wondering, if I seal the countertop with clear acrylic sealer, will that protect it from staining or do I need to paint the counter?

Yes, you can do that and it will last a very long time. Surface must be very clean for the acrylic to stick. The trick is to give it two coats and allow it to dry for at least 12 hours in between coats and after the second coat. Mixwax clear acrylic is perfect for this job.

What kind of countertop do you have?

Hi Shari. Acrylic will also stain. However, the effect you are looking for is something that will cause the beverage to pool or bead. I would use a car wax or bees wax. Car wax if it is in a location where no food will make contact. Further, wax can be reapplied as necessary with almost any surface!

An alternative could be to use one of the beautiful painting styles/techniques found on Pinterest. Using light shades of tan, gold etc. will blend with any tea stains and could be an inexpensive counter top upgrade.
  • there are food grade polyurethans for countertops.
