Master Bedroom Ceiling Fan ---- Not?

I have always had a ceiling fan in my bedroom, however, we are building a new home and I think I would prefer a pretty light fixture. Will I be sorry? I'm afraid that I'm choosing pretty over practical, but, I would also like a different look since our bedroom has a 12 foot tray ceiling. Any pros or cons? I'm in South Carolina, so summers are hot and humid....but we do have ac :) thanks!

A new home how exciting for you.How about being both pretty and practical with the ceiling fan. There are so many styles available. Even though you will have air conditioning there may be days when the ceiling fan would also help with the humidity.Just my thought.

I'm in Florida so I, too, know about hot and humid. Even though we have central A/C, we could not live without our ceiling fans, especially in the bedroom, since the A/C cools the air but doesn't always circulate it around as much as a fan does. I sleep best when the room is cool enough that I can bury myself under the top sheet and a lightweight matelasse coverlet (even in the heat of the summer), so the ceiling fan in our bedroom runs every single night. The weather has to be pretty darn cold outside (which is almost never) before we turn it off! The answer to your question could probably best be determined by how often you use the bedroom ceiling fan now. If you use it nightly, yes, you will probably miss it. If you use it only occasionally, well maybe you can easily do without it. Also something to factor in, the higher your ceilings, the more air circulation you will probably need. And you can also keep the A/C thermostat set a little higher if you use fans, thus reducing the power bill a bit. Are you aware they do make ceiling fan/chandelier combos? Pretty chandeliers, not just those ugly standard fan light kits. If you haven't considered that as a potential option, you might try googling some images on the internet to see if there is anything that appeals to you and fits your style. If you are still undecided, you could always put in a light fixture initially and replace it later with a ceiling fan if you need to, since conversion from light fixture to ceiling fan is quite easy and does not require any extra or special wiring.

I would try and keep the fan, and figure out a way to add a pretty light, or shades to the fan.

I was the same way. I had a chandelier for about 5 years. I decided I wanted a change so I started researching and found a combo ceiling fan & chandy. I ordered the kit from Lamps Plus and love it!

In SC, I vote keep the fan. We live in NC and our AC went out in the summertime. It took a week before our HVAC guys finally got it properly fixed. It was 105 degrees that week. I would not have survived without my ceiling fans. (In case anyone questions why I didn't just go to a hotel--The HVAC guys came out 5 days in a row to work on the AC. Each day they said that by the evening I would have cool air. I had to be at home for them to do the work and thought that the AC would cool off at night.)
  • I have a cathedral ceiling with a ceiling fan and even though it is great for moving air- I would love to have a beautiful chandelier. Since your bedroom is your retreat and with tray ceilings, I would go with a chandelier. If you need a fan, I would get a nice tower fan to move the air in the room and since cold air sinks, tower fans work great in summer to keep air flowing in rooms that do not have ceiling fans. There are a lot of nice ceiling fans but there is nothing more beautiful than a chandelier in a master bedroom. just my 2cents worth

If you have to pick one or the other, I would vote for the fan but...there are many options for ceiling fans with pretty lights on them that give you the best of both worlds..just be sure to price around if you find a unit you like..I have found significant price difference and if I look long enough...I find cheaper

You will need the fan, but find someone to make the light fixture that goes on it, in the style you want. It can be stained glass, or etched glass, etc...

I would use a ceiling fan with a beautiful light fixture and you can even use pretty crystal pieces on the fan/light pulls ! You might then consider using some smaller chandeliers over each bedside table. I think in a bedroom that the bed needs to be the focal point anyway !!! Whatever you decide to do, be faithful to your own style !!!!

Running a ceiling fan can be as or more expensive than ac, I run mine 24/7. But so many optional types you can get best of both worlds with a fan/light combo. Why opt out of the choice it will provide in the future? Just remember stay simple lines, shapes and light style as you may change your decor, but to replace a high mounted fan is a chore.

Since you have tray ceilings, how about doing cove lighting on the perimeter, which will play up the ceiling better than any other kind if lighting, along with a fan in the middle? Or there are several styles of retro looking fans now on the market with a single light and two fans - just search for double ceiling fans. http://dansceilingfans.com/content/metropolitan-dual-motor-ceiling-fan-oil-rubbed-bronze

The ceiling fan saves a fortune in electric bills and really adds to your sleeping comfort. I would recommend checking out the beautiful light fixtures that attach to the bottom of the fan.
