Blacktop repair
Who among the general contractors can suggest the best way to fill in the void left. Do I use blacktop patch or a blacktop compound that is applied with a caulk gun ?
With many thanks in advance.

Woodbridge Environmental Tiptophouse.com on Jan 18, 2012You will need to dig fairly deep to protect these wires from crushing from weight of autos. Perhaps placing them in a PVC pipe should be considered. But you already know this. As far as sealing what you patch it with will depend upon how wide the hole ends up being. Blacktop patch is best as compared to the stuff in the tube. The tube stuff is used to fix cracks. Once you break thought the driveway there is nothing for the tube stuff to stick to so it will simply seep into the gravel under the drive. You can also use cement patch which will fill void easy and is much easier to put into place. You simply mix and using a trowel push it into the void. Once done, and its dry. Use a good quality driveway sealer to hide the cement and seal it were it meets the asphalt so no water gets into the cracks and cause it to lift if you have a freeze. The asphalt patch can work as well. You need however to pound it into place with a mallet and block of wood or a lawn tamper. Once done this too should be sealed. The difficulty with using patch material it is hard to make it level with the current driveway and because of its thickness it will not flow easy enough to get around and into all the voids that are created when you dig.Helpful Reply

Paul M on Jan 19, 2012I've done that once before and I closed the cut with black polyurethane caulk. That was 15 years ago and it is still holding up just fine.Helpful Reply

Dan's of Central Florida, Inc. on Jan 19, 2012I see that Woodbridge has beat me to it, but I was going to suggest the asphault patch as well. We have used that to fill in things like you are talking about as well as potholes and things of that nature.Helpful Reply

LandlightS on Jan 19, 2012Paul...many thanks for the short concise answer. Thats what I waslooking for.....filling a 1/2 wide cut with asphault patch just wouldn't work...IMHO GaryHelpful Reply

Paul M on Jan 19, 2012Right you are LandlightS. That is why I used the caulk because I couldn't get the asphalt patch down in the crack/slot. Over a short time the caulk blends in with the asphalt and you really don't see it unless you are looking for it. Good luck with your wiring job.Helpful Reply
