We Created An Island From a Kitchen Table

The 2 Seasons
by The 2 Seasons
We recently moved into a new to us home. Although the kitchen is a wonderful room, it had some wasted space in the middle that could use an island. We are paying for that square footage, and I want to use it. Even though I looked and looked, I just couldn't find a ready-made island that I liked or that was the right size. So, I shopped the house and found the perfect solution - an old kitchen table.
I knew that an island would need to be "vertical" rather than "horizontal" in the room, and I decided that a kitchen table that I used in college might do the job. For college, I had painted the table's top yellow. Now, 10 years later, I decided to use chalk paint to make it match the black granite counter tops. I sealed it with a clear wax. The pine legs blend nicely with the cabinets, and so, I left them alone.
This is what the kitchen looked like on move-in day. You can see that there was a lot of wasted space in the middle of the room.
I added a towel bar to hold dish towels and will be adding hooks to the other side for pot holders. I will also be adding a shelf to the bottom for baskets and possibly casters to make it portable. To see more photos, please visit our blog.

Do you find that it is tall enough for you to use? I love the idea but because it's a table I wondered if it was high enough.
