With shutters its difficult even without any storage and bookshelf installed. Remember if you place any type of curtain over the window the shutter will not be able to be opened.

You could hang a curtain rod from the right and go as far as you can to the left, right to the bookshelf -- then hang a very "puffy" style curtain to cover up the space next to the bookshelf.

Another idea is to do a curved curtain rod -- one that goes along the wall and then curves onto the bookshelf. Not sure where you would find such a curved rod, though.

You could also hang curtains from the very top of the shutters. You would have to hang two panels, one from each shutter.

Yet another idea is to chop off a small portion of the molding near the wall. Then you could hang a curtain rod as normal.

Hi Marla, I just recently ran into this same problem with a client in a kitchen. We decided to go with a cornice board window treatment and I had the cornice board cut out the exact dimensions as the trim so the cornice board fit around the trim. It looks as though its unified and the trim is sitting infront of the window treatment. I am going back to the clients next week to take pics and will be happy to send them to you if you'd like. Of course in your case, you would mount the board ontop of the window trim.

Or, you can place a curved rod on the window trim and buy/make curtains w/ a 2" header with very little play (gathers) and it may not be perfect, but will give you a window dressing to fit a tight space.

On the opposite side seems like some kind of shelf. You could use a tension rod between the bookshelf and the smaller shelf.

Also, maybe one of those cable wire thingys (sorry, don't remember what they are called) because you can customize the width and it can be hung from the ceiling instead of on the wall.

They make rods where one end has no finial so it can bump right up to all ot object. Then you can hang draperies or just panels.

I would suggest a tension rod from book case to book case. I use them under my pretty curtains for the room darkening curtain and hang them in the window frame.

you can do a valance hung directly to window trim, they have ones thart have extenders which u could attach a spring loaded rod, be frugal and use an inexpensive shower rod, attach curtain
