Easy
Your tween can have a room from another time with paint & an outdoor pathway cement mold. Place the clean mold against the wall of your choice. (flat side) Trace with a fine point marker and rotate. Pick a paint (gray/brown/tan) that is slightly darker than the surrounding walls and fill in the "stones" completely. Next sponge a darker color over the stones in patches to give the stone depth & texture. Allow to dry. Use a gray paint to fill in the grout area. (take your time) The finished project will look like a castle wall!
Cheaper than wallpaper and it will last for years.

This is an idea worth keeping. I have a windowless large basement room that feels more like a cave. I'd use a light colored finish to brighten the room. Awesome!
