Ideas needed for a birthday gift for my granddaughter

My granddaughter's birthday is January 31, this coming Sunday. I have no money to get her a gift and I'm not creative enough to make her anything. I do know how to crochet but I haven't done that in a while. My question is what can I make a 2 year old as a gift that she will enjoy receiving? I know that she likes stuffed dolls but how can I make one?

How about making her a cute hat?? Those are pretty simple and don't use a lot of yarn! and she would get to use it!

Also - search on YouTube for crochet doll tutorials - you might find some out there! The BEST gifts don't come from any store - they come from the heart and NO ONE else has one exactly like it :)
  • Do you have a dollar? That's all it costs for a pack of balloons from the Dollar Tree. I posted a tutorial yesterday on how to make a balloon topiary.... My kids use them as indoor volleyballs. Colorful, fun and fairly indoor safe. Balloons ARE a supervision required toy, especially for a two year old...but you can make colorful fun with them and it takes under 15 minutes.

What about a sock monkey? Kids love them, and you could use used socks, thrift store or $ store ones. http://www.funky-sock-monkeys.com/how-to-make-a-sock-monkey.html http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Make-a-Sock-Monkey-3/

Cynthia if you have yarn you could make your granddaughter a little crocheted "lovie " blanket. Just a little square, handmade by her Grandma for her to hold and love. Could be a sweet keepsake for her and maybe you can add on to it through the years. It could eventually become a baby blanket for her own child someday. Best Wishes and Happy Birthday to her!

If you have yarn on hand you could crochet her headbands for her head, or a hat and scarf. If you have flour, salt, cornstarch, vegetable oil, food coloring and water you can make her play dough in her favorite colors. Hope this helps 😀.

This is a great time to give her one of your personal treasures. Write a little story of why it has special meaning to you that she can keep. A great making a memory....

Are you close enough to spend some time with her? You might give her a certificate that she could cash in to spend some time with you doing things like reading books and talking; baking cookies, drawing with her, etc.

Please don't let your budget get you down. Remember: She's only four! Think back over your own life. Do you remember WHAT your grandmothers gave you for your fourth birthday? I'll bet you don't. How about making a special date with her to do something she loves. If she's a "little lady" type, she might enjoy having a very grownup tea party, with fancy clothes and "elegant" cookies. This could be at home OR in a restaurant. If she's a tomboy, a special trip, just for the two of you, to a nice park -- perhaps one that's new to her -- would be just the ticket. Please believe me: at that age, she won't care WHAT you give her. She'll care about having some special time together with the grandmother she loves, just the two of you enjoying each other's company and making memories. I spent much of my life without the money I needed to buy things I thought my daughter wanted. Now that she's in her thirties, she's told me repeatedly that it was the THINGS WE DID TOGETHER that she remembered, even if it was nothing but baking cookies or a special birthday cake to celebrate her big day. We too often assume that it's the THINGS we give that are important, but what really matters is the love you shower her with on her special day (and every day, for that matter). Another idea is to record yourself reading one of her favorite stories to her/with her. It's something she can play any time she wants, and -- believe, me, I know this from experience -- the sound of a grandparent's voice, recorded for all time, is a treasure worth more than money itself.

If you have some different materials at home, you can make her a book. For example a book about ducks decorated with strings she can feel.

a handkerchief doll made from one of her old blankets. She is so little it will be easy to hold and using one of her blankets will bring her comfort.

Have a REAL tea party with just you and her. Dress her up in some of your fancy clothes and jewels (fake pearls and costume jewelry) and bake a goodie or two and boom, a tea party! You will cherish the memory of your time together. Be sure to take a pic of you both, as she may not remember and it would be a wonderful keepsake for her, when she is an adult.

um she's two. Get a box and make a stove with markers. Then use dollar store toy utensils to "cook". Or make a cave our of the box. Boxes are great for the imagination.

I think the best gift you can give to your granddaughter is to spend time with her! Teach her how to braid yarn or a simple loom made from Popsicle sticks or just get down with her and color (lots of pages these days on the internet for free)! There are tons of similar suggestions in the comments and all over Pinterest and HomeTalk! Just enjoy yourself and she will too!

@Julie Benson-Grant best suggestion yet - time and love spent are cheap and invaluable!

You could make her a magic wand. Trace star on cardboard and cover with foil and glue short lengths of ribbon from centre. Use a piece of doweling for the stick. If you have a glue gun you can use hot glue to glue the star to the doweling. You can use magic marker to colour the doweling. You can also make a crown covered in foil out of cardboard. Add a necklace and she can play princess.

Make her a cake, a little party. Cake and ice cream is cheap. Her parents will also love it. Daughters birthday is the same day.

I would like to add as an adult I don't remember the presents my grandmothers gave me but the time I spent with them and the things they taught me. One grandmother taught me to embroidery, love of donuts and spiced gum drops. The other taught me to crochet giving me my own hook and skein of yarn, fresh apple pies out of the oven and love for tea. Their love and time with me is what I will cherish for ever.

Two years old shouldn't be hard to find something. Get a tablet of plain paper, draw some pictures, ( these would be a great memory for her) then get a cheap box of crayons so she can color them. She would be able to keep this many years. When she is all grown up she would still have it and her memories of you. The drawings you make yourself would be priceless.
