Kitchen remodel- cabinets dillema

We bought unfinished oak kitchen cabinets. Now I am not sure what I want to do with them... Paint? Stain? Clear Coat? Antique chalk paint. The floors are a dark, wood ceramic tile. The walls are brisk, olive and a purple zinfandel.

I would choose a stain rather than paint. There are many types of different colors and finishes available by Min Wax and they have a website for you to research.Since your floor is dark in my opinion I would go lighter on the cabinets.
  • I used some of these cabinets in my home renovations and they do stain up rather nicely but make sure to use the wood conditioner before staining! Wood would go with any decor and if you sell would be more appealing to a buyer than painted (in many areas). Painting would look nice too but will be a bit more work. Make sure to cover with a good polyurethane too. The MinWax Janet describes is a stain I use a lot and it needs to be covered in a polyurethane. Use Oil based poly (this is from my experience) because it really is more durable). good luck

I thought a pale gray stain might be pretty with the touch of gray in the counter top, and would not be too dark. It would allow the wood grain to show through, also. Or, perhaps even a greenish-gray(?) stain, to pick up on the olive tone in the paint.

I agree that the use of a gray tinted stain would look nice...maybe try staining with Unicorn Spit...

I just bought these same cabinets to add to my existing cabinets. I am going to paint all of them white with chalk paint. Then I'm going to add a "picture" in the "frame" of the cabinets.

I just finished an island I made from unfinished red oak cabinets. I used Miss Mustard Seeds milk paint in Curio thinned two parts water to one part paint as a "stain" I'm happy with the result!

Like @Cindy I have the same cabinets as well. When they were new I stained and sealed them...some years and years later, I cleaned them up added a few more and painted them white...Love them. Your green wall color I think would be amazing on the cabinets.. With these type of cabinets, know you need to calk the joint between cabinets with laytex calk before your final coat of paint (just to fill the joint) and any nicks or dents or they will show up big time in the painted finish where you don't see them in the stained finish really. Also, if you paint, get door hardware that has enough profile that when you use the doors your nails don't hit the cabinets or over time the paint will get dinged. Good luck what ever you do!

I just redid my cabinets. They were a dark cherry. I lightly sanded and then painted white with painters powder from Chalky and Company. They came out awesome . you could contact me for more info on painters powder if you are interested.

Cream would be ok, but not a pure white

Both me and my sister-n-law have done Chalk paint with Chalk paint wax on them. Sooo easy and we both love them! Here are the vlogs if you want to check them out. I went with a darker color which only needed one coat so my cabinets only had about 2 jars of paint which is like $20.00 and still had wax left in the one jar. We both distressed ours and used clear wax but it does come in stained colors too. Rachels', lace color took about 3 coats. Hope this helps! :D
