Help needed in my chair recovery process

I am trying to recover this chair, and I don't know how to remove these black plastic things. They go all the way through to the other side. They are totally flat on the surface. Anyone know how to remove them?

Marilyn try gently prying the edge with a flathead screwdriver. It should pop out once the edge is lifted.

Thanks, I tried prying with a screwdriver and it didn't work, but maybe I need to try harder.

It is probably an interlocking two piece keeper plug/ get in under the edges with a sharp blade, cut off the top and then you can slide the rest out of the other side.

    Thanks, I'll do that.

Why are they there? What is their purpose? Maybe they are there to try and prevent someone from reupholstering so that the maker can sell more chairs.

I was just wondering if you really need to remove them? If they are holding 2 pieces together and you remove them ,how will you hold them together once you're ready to put them back together.

Doesn't the fabric go over the top of them? A piece to light batting should cover them. What does the fabric piece look like that you removed? And did it have batting on it? Do it the same as it was. Be sure mark everything really well so it goes back together the same as it came off. Good Luck.

I LOOKED AGAIN. The fabric and foam goes behind the wood? The used the black dots to hold it on. You should be able to pry the wood off. Do you have a thin pry bar so you can get them to pop out?

Thanks to all for your suggestions. I used a sharp chisel to pop the tops off. I will have to drill out the rest of the plastic. I found replacements on Amazon. They are called push rivets; actually used in the auto industry. The way this was assembled I don't think they intended for this chair to ever be recovered. But I think I am slowly beating it.

Are they coming from the other side, making like tucks in the cushion? Could they be removed on the back wood side by sliding an xacto knife or razor blade between them & wood & cutting them off? Are they hard plastic like material & could be cut?
