Beach Condo Bath Redo

This is the bathroom in our one bedroom condo in Myrtle Beach, SC. We rent it out, so durable finishes are preferred. I was thinking about removing the tub & installing a walk in tile shower. We will probably also remove the wall between the vanity & toilet. I would like to do a driftwood tile on the floor & eventually continue it throughout the condo. Suggestions would be greatly appreciated. The current vanity must have been made from particle board, because it has swelled & is separating from the moisture.

Personally because this is a rental, installing a shower enclosure may not be the way to go.I feel that most tenants will not treat the bathroom with respect and the glass doors will most likely be a hard ache down the road.I also do not think taking down the wall makes sense as many like privacy. again these are only my thoughts. Before picking out the flooring I would choose a vanity and go from there. Another thought to keep cost down I would research The Big Box stores for closeouts tor Habitat for Humanity which offer great discounts.

@Janet Pizaro I agree with everything you say and I live in Myrtle Beach and sell the condos and I see what people do to them.
  • I would not put in a tile or natural stone shower because they need to be regrouted and sealed every year. Plus if you ever have a problem then you have to rip the tile out. I have a girlfriend who rents her house out and she had her bathroom done in beautiful travertine (this was for her and then they got transferred) which has not been taken care of by renters. I personally would leave well enough alone if the shower and tub are functional maybe update the faucets and put in shower doors to avoid any water mishaps. I would invest the money in the new vanity and tile the whole condo. I would keep the wall as is because if many people share the condo someone can take a shower or potty and the other person can still brush their teeth. I would think about more towel bars (make them good quality installed on the studs not with anchors to avoid ripping them off the wall). There are some very nice one piece shower units on the market and they are so much easier to clean with no maintenance. just my thoughts from someone who has renovated 3 houses for people who rent out their property

I would keep the tub/shower as is and not remove the wall for the privacy issue. I'd concentrate on new flooring and updating the vanity, lighting and faucets. I would think a neutral relaxing decorating scheme would work nicely. It's neutral now but could use an updated more spa like appearance...people begin and end their day in a bathroom. Especially on vacation, you want to feel a bit indulged with some beautiful surroundings.

I agree about not adding a door on the shower. Keeping them clean is difficult at best. Shower curtains can be changed out often if needed. I like an ocean theme. I'd do light blue walls with sea shells etc. Glueing shells around the edge of the mirror would make a pretty frame for it. And then some nice shell prints. Light, bright and clean.

There are some amazing laminate floors that look like driftwood. That could be your answer. I have used it in my home and love it. Maybe go with a piece of furniture for a vanity. For the same amount of money you will spend on a new vanity there is a better piece of older furniture made very well that will give you more durability. Take your measurements and put them in your phone. You'll always have them around. There are soooo many thrift and furniture resales down in Myrtle Beach. You could also Chalk Country Paint it. Let me know if you need resources to find a vanity. I buy a lot of furniture down here.coastalbohemian@gmail.com

I would not put laminate in the bathroom unless it is the type for wet environments with the sealing joints otherwise down the road you maybe replacing it quickly.

I would leave the shower alone too. You could buy splash guards to install on the front and back of the room side of the tub. They just stick on the tub and the wall. There are a few reasons not to have a door on your tub. Breakage is one, but mildew and soap scum buildup the ones that immediately come to mind. Shower curtains can be washed or thrown away. The problem with laminate floors is water. If someone forgets the tub water or kids are splashing it can ruin your floor. I think I would stick with tile in there. And, looking at your vanity I can see putting a sink unit in a shelving unit. You can put baskets on the shelf with towels rolled in them and another with toilet paper. I have seen them in hotels and they look very nice. Plus. Easy to keep clean and no broken doors. If you are thinking of changing the toilet, I suggest getting a tall toilet and one that is a water saver.

THERE ARE LOTS OF CHOICES OF WALK IN SHOWERS RIGHT. BUT TAKING A TUB OUT IS A DISADVANTAGE ESPECIALLY IF YOU R GOING TO HAVE SMALL FOLKS IN U WILL NEED A TUB AND I WATCH A LOT OF HGTV HOUSE HUNTERS THE WOMEN FOLKS ARE LOOKING FOR A TUB. SOMETIMES IT ACTUALLY MAKES OR BREAKS THE DEAL. A BEACH THEME IS MORE THAN SEA SHELLS AND FLIP FLOPS THO THAT IS INSPIRING BUT THE BEAUTIFUL BLUES AND GREENS THAT ARE SO RELAXING COME IN PLAY TOO AND THEN USE THE SHELLS AND BASKETS , SAND AND CANDLES, PICTURES TOO IN THE BATH. I LOVE THE IDEA OF AN OLD PIECE OF FURNITURE FOR A SINK. AND CABINET.THESE THINGS COST A FORTUNE IF U BUY ONE ALREADY MADE AND THEY ARE NOT AS ELEGANT LOOKING AS AN OLD VANITY RENEWED AND BROUGHT BACK TO LIFE FOR ANOTHER PURPOSE. GOOD LUCK DHALL

I've been traveling to MB for over 30 years and still loving that place and I'm alway sad to see travelers/renters abuse condo's with all the hard work put in from the owner!! You could re-face the the front of the vanity and add a fake front to appear like doors the molding and bead board and screw it shut (this way maintenance can still have access) and this insures to pipe damage underneath and spillage and paint and add new hardware and for the faucet spray paint them is another option and I have photo of that idea. As far as the tub I would just leave it as is because shower door tracks tend to rust and become neglected over time unless your cleaning service was like ours very fussy and on top not just a lick and a promise. The flooring always take a beating (sand and luggage rollers) and the driftwood tile would be a nice touch throughout the condo. Best of luck🏖🌴

I say don't take out the wall between the toilet/tub area, and the vanity area. I would question what would be the intended purpose of doing this, and if the effect would be worth the labour and expense involved. Due to the door already there, it does provide privacy, which is usually wanted if more than one person is using the bathroom at the same time.

Also, a huge consideration would be what would need to be done with the existing electrical (I see from the picture that there are at least two outlets) and any other HVAC stuff that may be there.
