Black grout with white subway tiles?

Shari on Feb 08, 2016I have only removed enough grout (in the bathroom shower) to re-grout some lines of cracked grout before I ended up with water damage. I was told that in order to re-grout, you have to dig out the old grout first. Just the small amount I did was tedious and time-consuming--definitely not an easy task! Plus, depending on what tool you use to remove the grout, there is risk of damaging tile so I cannot imagine taking on a project like you describe just to gain "personality." Seems like adding accessories, artwork (if you have wall space), fabrics, colored dinnerware etc. would be soooooo much easier to make the kitchen more "you." Time-wise, it would probably be faster to demolish the tile and start over than re-grout, but of course, that wouldn't be very cost effective. You might have another option though. Here in the States, we have 2 products I'm familiar with that can be used to change the color of existing grout. One is called Grout Refresh and the other is called Grout Renew. They are like grout "paint." If you can find either of those products where you live, or something comparable, that would be my recommendation if you are adamant about wanting to change the grout color. Using a product like that would be so much less labor intensive but still economical.Helpful Reply

Valerie W on Feb 08, 2016You can use a grout marker to change the colour of your grout. http://www.saman.ca/product/201-grout-stain-marker-mocha << this is a Canadian company so you would have to check in your local hardware to see what products they have that do the same job.Helpful Reply

Carole on Feb 08, 2016I guess doing the shower, you would have to commit to not using it till the new grout was in or else as you say, water damage. Thanks for the tips on the alternatives, I will look out for them at the hardware store. Very useful info. I think also a tiled area for shower is much bigger area than our tiled wall along the kitchen counters and behind the stove. Yes, risk of damaging tiles if not using the correct tool I should think. Thanks againHelpful Reply

Susan Meggitt on Feb 08, 2016A lot of the big box stores ie Lowes have grout "pens"that you can color the grout lines. Try it in a place where you can't really see it and see if you like it. Good luck!Helpful Reply
