What's the best way to grow potatoes in a small area?

potatoes are the easiest veg to grow. you can pretty much grow them everywhere. I am not sure how they grow in some climents , I live in eastern Washington and it gets pretty hot in the summer here, they need to be planted early spring or when frost is off ground.,

I grow them in Plastic Half Barrels that are used for serving cold drinks at parties. I bought them for my daughters graduation party to serve canned soda and water in ice for $5 at walmart. I cut large holes in the bottom for drainage. Place my seed potatoes in the bottom in about 3" of soil. Once the potato plants start growing I add 3" of soil every week. Then I dump them to harvest. I get about 20lbs of potatoes per barrel.

I've grown them in the decorative planters on my front porch for years. They have really pretty flowers before they die down and are ready to dig.

I grow mine in pots so I dont' have to bend over as far. There are several online tutorials about how to container plant potatoes

I've seen stacked tires. Fill with dirt and straw put your seed potatoes in. When they grow you just knock off one tire at a time. http://www.instructables.com/id/Grow-Potatoes-In-Tires/

You can make a wooden planter with slats that you can add as the potato plant grows. This will give you a lot of potatoes in a small 3' square area. (Up to 100#s) here's a link https://www.pinterest.com/pin/67061481925298209/ & picture, so you can get an idea:

I grew potatoes in square type hay bales on my concrete patio one year. Keep them watered and when it's time to harvest cut the bales open, pick up the potatoes and compost the hay.
