Help painting my kitchen cabinets

I have these ugly, dark stained kitchen cabinets and I want to paint them. I notice that there is polyurethane on them. What is the easy way to get that off? Help me!

I would try using mineral spirits on the cabinets. I am not sure if it will totally remove the polyurethane you may also have to lightly sand them. Remember if you are going to paint them you will have to use a good primer first. Good Luck

There are paints out there made to cover "shiny" wood - Miss Mustard Seed is one, and you might be able to do it with Annie Sloan, too. I painted over our wood kitchen cabinets with Nuvo. I just had to thoroughly clean them, first.

Lightly sanding the cabinets would take off the sheen. It just has to be scuffed up enough for the paint to adhere, or like KatAych mentioned, using chalk paint will stick without sanding. Another option is liquid sandpaper. Also, a good stain blocking primer.

If your cabinets are old 60's-80's they may have brown spots that bleed through. I just painted a full kitchen in white. I put a light sand on everything and then put a coat shellac (Zinsser has a shellac like product) before painting. Any other stain blocker can allow stains to come through. I had that happen on a piece of furniture and had to sand and shellac a 2nd time. Sand the shellac coat with a 220 grit just enough to put a tack to it and then you can paint with box store paint. If you use chalk paint you will have to wax or polyacrylic over it as it is porous. Use white vinegar and water to clean grease off , however, sanding will remove most of kitchen residue.
