I am the one taking out the wall to add a free standing beverage bar

The Garden Frog with C Renee on Feb 12, 2016Just about anything can be material for a countertop. You can have countertops made the exact measurements you need from home stores, granite fabricators, etc you could also create one with wood. The sky is the limit and skill level. the wall seems a bit low or are you taking it out? You just have to remember that if you make a counter out of wood, you will need to sand the edges so they are not sharp or splinters or trim it out with an edge. Do not add the counter til you are all done with your project so you have the right measurements. good luckHelpful Reply

Kathy on Feb 13, 2016You want to take out the short wall? Is it a load bearing? If this were my house, I would get a new granite (or whatever you wanted) counter top for the little wall and have it extend into the dining room 2' or 3'. I would get some high stools and that's where I would eat my breakfast or lunch.Helpful Reply

Lynn Palmatier on Feb 13, 2016Need to know if it is a load bearing wall because if it is, you will need to leave the post at your doorway. May not be, but the ceiling beam needs to be all the way across the wall. Thoughts for you bar is to check to see if you have a reclaim center that takes in cabinets from recycle. We have a habitat Restore where you can get some good deals. As far as countertops, you can have lots of options. Butcherblock, granite, manufactured stone, wood planks, etc. Know that most will need some sort of sealant. Remember, it looks like your heat source (baseboard heat) is also on that wall and will need assessment as to your heating options as well. Electrical can be incorporated into your island/bar. Lighting is another thought for overhead. Get your imagination flowing but always remember to consider what exists and the difficulty of removal...Helpful Reply

Terry on Feb 13, 2016I would use Kitchen Cabinets....if you live anywhere near Warren Ohio...you can go to Kraftmaid outlet (open every two weeks or so) and buy cabinets...they range for five dollars ( no doors) to 80 dollars.Helpful Reply

Nana moving on on Feb 13, 2016You have elec outlets and a heater in your short wall. First you need to figure out where to move all that. If your baseboard heater is vented with a pipe inside the wall. You might try to take the top off and look down inside to see what all you'll have to move.Helpful Reply

Rus1058682 on Feb 15, 2016Since you are the one doing the work, why not build forms and build concrete counter tops on them.. I see these all the time, and if unsure you can go to the Ron Hazelton site,(just type the name in the search bar).. Or do the same with any site.. They have great directions out there for the asking..Helpful Reply
