Yes! You can prime it with Zinser's spray primer. Then the color of your enamel paint will go on more evenly and you won't have to do so many coats to cover it. The primer gives your paint something to adhere to.

I ALWAYS use a spray "clean metal primer" on anything metal, old brass lamps, etc. and the paint doesn't chip.

Yes you will have to -otherwise the paint will rub or scratch off. Please make sure that you clean the metal before hand with mineral spirits or plain rubbing alcohol to remove any polish residue. Kilz or Zinsser both have spray primer that will work well for it. Have Fun!!

Yes, it will turn out better and be a lot easier to paint, make sure it is cleaned really good first.

You could try a vinegar solution. In painting old tins I learned that wiping the tin with vinegar takes any residues before painting. I also do a light sanding before base coating.

I had a bunch of old silverplate that I just spraypainted with a hammered silver spray paint. I didn't do any prep at all. They still look great and I never need to polish. These were vases , not anything food would be in contact with.

I use automotive primer (spray), it works great.
