DIY Stacked Cabinet Kitchen Makeover
I gave my builder grade kitchen a major makeover by stacking cabinets, lowering a raised bar, and extending an existing island.
One of the first projects I tackled was to extend and expand the island and peninsula. First, we removed the Formica counter tops and cut down the raised bar on the peninsula. I built wing walls on either side of the island, and wrapped the entire thing is decorative trim.
When we first bought our house, we loved the location, the floorplan, and the yard, but the kitchen was less than desirable. The day we received the keys, I rolled up my sleeves and got to work.
I modified the stock lower cabinet to accommodate the large, stainless steel, apron sink.
We removed the microwave and built a countertop model into a lower cabinet. In its place above the stove, we built a custom, sloping range hood. Instead of removing the stock upper cabinets, I built a new row of cabinets and stacked them above. I cut glass panels and attached new doors.
Everything received two coats of primer and three coats of paint. I added stainless steel bar pulls to give the cabinets a finished look.
I installed a stainless steel backsplash and we swapped out the old broken appliances with a set scavenged off of Craigslist. To give ourselves more storage, we built a fridge surround and a walk-in pantry. The whole kitchen, including having granite countertops and wood look tile installed, cost around $9,000.
