DIY Easy Clay Birdhouse

Easy
I was inspired by the one above which I actually bought at a museum gift shop several years ago. It appears to be made out of some type of clay. I knew that I could buy air dry clay and the old paper mache bowl technique came to mind.
It turned out really nice but I found out that it cannot go outside with the air dry clay. I think it would work with polymer clay and will have to try it soon.

I love the concept! I was just thinking about drainage. Seeing as there are holes on top to hang the birdhouse with,, what about when it rains? The water is going to sit in the house and the nest will get very soggy. Would it be a good idea to put a drainage hole in the bottom of the house?

are you sure it is safe for birds? clay and paint/sealer are toxic. Maybe they are not for big animals like humans (low VOC) and it could be extremely toxic for small animals with tiny lungs

Please tell me what you did to the clay so it wouldn't crack? I did a soda pop bottle doll of Ben Franklin and the whole thing cracked and fell to pieces

I don't see any answers to all the very good questions. I tried this with the Crayola clay, Hardened nicely and cracked apart in less than 2 days. It was exasperating and clay was $11.00. Tried to patch it up with more clay and a little water on the original and the original fell apart. It would never have held up to rain.

@Sami Sorry that you had a bad experience. You are right it turns out this will not hold up against the rain. I updated this post pretty quickly to point out that polymer clay would be a better choice. Several other hometalkers pointed this out in the answers above too. Sorry you missed them.

This is a bad idea and has nothing to do with caring for birds.
