Erica ~~ good humor there ! Although, I still don't "get" the bottles. Perhaps its because I'm a Californian? Art does come in many ways, doesn't it ~~ !
Browse thru the above posts - there isn't necessarily any rhyme or reason - but if nothing else it's a conversation piece. It just IS - Not everything in this world has to have logic!!! SMILE : - )
I certainly agree with the "whimsy" concept ~ ! I wonder if Walter has other whimsical items in his garden that he'd like to share ? Walter ~~ where are you?? =^..^=
@Louise: It's a tradition that dates to the Congo in the 9th century, which was then brought to Europe and North America by African slaves. Malevolent spirits, on the prowl during the night, are said to enter the bottles, where they become trapped by an 'encircling charm.' It is said that when the wind blows past the tree, you can hear the moans of the ensnared spirits whistling on the breeze. Come morning they are burnt up by the rising sun. They've long since become a Southern folk art tradition.
Just read a large article with many pics on bottle trees on Dave's Garden internet winter newsletter. I bookmarked it so I can refer back when needed.
I have a small bottle tree I purchased from a gardening catalog several years ago. To say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, oh so true! I love it but my 22 yr old son's comments were identical to my husband: What's next for our yard? An old jalopy on concrete blocks? I think not!
