Dee Lynch on Mar 07, 2016Find a used 3piece entertainment center. (garage sales-Craigslist) The one that has 2 towers, and an adjustable top with a light in the center.... Place a pegboard piece to join the 2 towers (for threads, bobbins, as well as hanging items at your fingertips) You can use baskets or stack, on the shelves as well as inside the enclosed doors at the bottom for all your items that junk up your space. Of course you would put your sewing machine in the center, under the convenient light.....and Walla you have a neat area. I would chalk paint the whole unit a bright and cheerful color.Helpful Reply

Janet Pizaro on Mar 07, 2016You can get baskets or totes for the fabric and patterns tools and yarn. The thread can be organized by using a rod of sort and hang it up.Helpful Reply

Dfm on Mar 07, 2016hi! i have my thread sorted by color family- greenish thread in one plastic storage box, blues in an other, same with reds and yellows. i'v found that some thread will fade under bright lights. also a p.i.a. to get to the spool i need if its on a bar and in the middle. patterns are sorted as to size if for garments, project type if not. fabrics are sorted as to type and use- upholster fabric in 1 tote, denim in an other. cotton quilting fabrics on hangers meant to hold 5 pair pants - sorted to project. otherwise folded and in storage tote. light is not kind to textiles- many will fade on one spot, not evenly thru all the fabric. if you have the closet space-hang the fabrics up. make sure the hangers a pants hangers. they wont wrinkle so bad or fade on a crease line. the yard sticks and other tools are hanging off nails on the bookcases. bookcases built in along one wall- super cool. hold lots pastic srorge boxes. i have my batting on a shelf that runs the width of the room, and above the door and window. my embroidery supplies have half a salvaged dresser all to them selves. the serger and sewing machine have their own tables with the specialty tools that they acquire. my cutting table is a kitchen base cabinet on wheels with a extra large counter top on it- used to use it as a floating island in house no.1. it now holds batting scraps for smaller projects and my cutting mats- its in the middle of the room so i can get to all sides of project with out having to displace the project. on one wall is the audition panel- a flannel sheet held up by a rod supported by coat hooks. it gives me room to lay out my project- most fabrics will stick to a flannel with little encouragement- also known as the st pin. lighting- well i don't like casting my shadow on what i'm trying to sew...so i use a bendable goose desk lamp on my sewing machine table and position it according to what is being sewn. the cutting table is under the the main lights of the room. this is the current set up- it's working fine. think thu the steps you take to make your projects-and go from there.Helpful Reply

Susan Bechamp on Mar 07, 2016For storing all the small items, a sewing basket can hold a lot. For added small storage I use the same system as in my garage. Hardware bins on pegboard. Mason and baby food jars mounted to the bottoms of shelves hold buttons, bobbins, tailors chalk, etc... I converted a stereo stand to hold my fabrics. I also use storage cubes with canvas baskets. I use an adjustable height craft table that can be folded up when I need the space. I have a comfortable chair, end table and floor lamp for relaxing work. Best investment is adjustable lighting, even if you need an electrician to add more outlets. An easy to clean floor helps. My sewing room is under the eaves and lacks height, plan your space for the work you do. Ironing board is near the window so I can stand up straight and ventilate the steam out the window.Helpful Reply
