Paint for Kitchen Cabinets

Cynthia kloeter
by Cynthia kloeter
I have cabinets near the stove top that will have steam constantly hitting them. Currently it discolours the stain temporarily and stays wet, so looking for best way to paint cabinets without them peeling.
Cabinets cannot be raised up and steam currently hits them.

If the cabinets were sealed correctly that should not happen.

Have you thought about moving your microwave somewhere else and putting in an updraft range hood?

@Cynthia kloeter You must be a lot taller than me - cuz I can tell you that there's no way I'd be able to put anything of substance into that microwave! LOL

There are many paints out there which would work well on cabinets. My friend's painter used Automobile paint. I'm not sure which maker, maybe Rustoliem. I'm pretty sure there is a cabinet paint. I will be using either Outdoor paint or chalk paint. I make my own chalk paint with Plaster of Paris. The best thing is to seal them.
  • i have the exact same set up as you do. my cabinets are fine. you have to seal them. General Finishes has a wipe on top coat that's easy to apply. you need 2-3 coats. Also, use the exhaust fan on the microwave. (you do have it vented up into the attic area to outside, right?

Melamine paint. May be spelled wrong, but it is a tough durable paint.

The vent exhaust should be on when cooking.

@Barbara C it is but steam still goes up onto cabinets as they seem to be hung rather low. I do appreciate your response and help! :)

Try Marine paint - I used it in my kitchen on the cabinet doors - it's pretty bulletproof looks great (shiny) is very washable and can take the steam from the oven!

Over time, the steam will do a number on the paint too. The best fix would be to remove the microwave vent because, from pros in the business, I here they just are not up to the venting that a good stand alone vent is - especially if they just have a recirculating vent. I hope you have a true vent going to the outside. To get a real fix, purchase a new vent. I removed my regular vent and stained a wood vent cover to match my cabinets and put in a good vent insert. I love the charm of the wood vent, but it was more expensive then just getting a good white metal hood vent, which you could do inexpensively. You can have a cabinet retrofitted to hold a microwave, or set it on the counter, or on a microwave cart or place it in the pantry if you have one.If you choose to paint for whatever reason, you will need two coats of a good bonding primer, Zinsser makes some, and two coats of a good cabinet paint - I use a latex acrylic enamel. Take a door to your reputable paint store and they will set you up with what you need. I hear mixed reviews from people who paint their oak cabinets to they love it, to it was a lot of work and didn't look so good after a few months. In part it will depend on how patient you are with DIY:)The standard height between counter and cabinets is 18 inches. A stand alone hood should be between 24 to 30 inches from the stove burners at least, and possibly more depending on the directions of the hood and the type of stove.
