Erica Glasener on Mar 15, 2012Sara, I prefer the old fashioned roses, many are fragrant and disease resistant. Consider some of the species climbers and exceptionally hardy hybrids such as 'Cecile Brunner', 'Lamarque', 'Lady Banks', 'Fortuniana', and 'Zepherine Drouhin'. Two vigorous climbers that are considered Earth Kind (roses that will take our heat and humidity, among other factors) are 'New Dawn' and 'Reve d' Or.' For sources I have used mail order but try Scottsdale Farms, scottsdalefarms.com If possible, purchase roots grown on their own roots, not grafted. They will have better disease resistance and vigor.Helpful Reply

Douglas Hunt on Mar 15, 2012I second Erica's nomination of "Zepherine." It's a terrific, problem-free, gloriously fragrant rose. The Antique Rose Emporium (www.antiqueroseemporium.com) offers a climbing sport of "Old Blush," a rose that has been proving its worth since 1752.Helpful Reply
