Has anyone lowered a floor in their home?

Pat Russell on Mar 17, 2016I understand you love the high ceiling, but the higher floors most likely have all the underpinnings (straight to the ground) to hold the floors. This would not seem to be a DIY unless you are builders!Helpful Reply

William on Mar 17, 2016Pat is correct. It's easier to raise a floor than lowering a floor. It's a structural endeavor. This would involve engineers, qualified builders, and permits that may not even be issued. Don't know the layout, but I would raise the living room floor and leave a sunken sitting area around the fireplace.Helpful Reply

Lynne Gray-Ross on Mar 18, 2016When we added to the house, one floor was higher. Beefed up the floor joists and supported the new joists. Then cut down to the new joists. There!Helpful Reply

Straight Nails Construction on Mar 20, 2016Agree with all that say raising would be much easier and more cost effective, (but not cheap) than the lowering of floors.Helpful Reply
