Replacing a variable switch with an on/off switch for an exhaust fan?
-
KMS Woodworks on Mar 20, 2012If this switch is a "variable" control and not a fixed "3 speed" switch then you should be fine. Multi position switches have multiple "leads" that go back to the motor and energize more areas of the "coil" in the motor itself. This imparts a higher field (the elctromagnets that cause the motor to spin) and there by change the speed. In a variable switch the current is "adjusted" in just a single "winding" of the motor to control the speed.Helpful Reply
