Ductless Mini-Split HVAC

Jeanette S on May 20, 2013I looked into these and they seem very special except I was told that they do not perform well where there is high humidity!!! So we went for the small 110 Volt window units to supplement our cooling. It is good because our problem is our house is old with everything on 1 system so the upstairs needs a boost. For empty nesters it is good to turn on a unit 30 minutes before bed time to cool it down and then put it on a timer. Saves a lot on the cooling bill!Helpful Reply

Storywood Designs on May 20, 2013Thanks @Jeanette S, that's great to know. We had a friend who runs a commercial HVAC business come by yesterday and he said that the cost of the 2 systems is basically a wash since we have the infrastructure in place, so I think that, combined with what you said, helps make our decision!Helpful Reply

Miles Enterprises Inc. on May 20, 2013most bonus rooms if added to the main ducted system fail because of the length of overal runand the size of theroom. most people do not want to have the added expense iof havinhg the trunk line upsizedto fit the needs of the room. you will do better with an appropiately sized mini split.Helpful Reply

Woodbridge Environmental Tiptophouse.com on May 21, 2013Mini split systems are a good fit for your basement. You need to provide however a few things in order for them to work. A place in which to drain any condensate that will develop when running on the cooling mode. You can purchase mini-pumps to send the condensate up and out but they are expensive. So be sure to mount the indoor part above the outside soil level and on an outside wall. Do your homework on manufactures. While their are many brands, warranty service is another issue all together. I will not name companies or brands, but there are only two systems I will sell my clients because of difficulty in getting repair parts for the others. Remember you get exactly what you pay for. There are systems made now that have picture frames covering the indoor part of the system. Unique idea, but steer clear of them. I have removed a few of these systems in the past because of part issues not available in my area. They also have poor air flow. They do not push the air out across the room and only blow it out sideways. If the room is larger you want the air to move around to get the best effect from them. On cost, these systems cost more then a new system for central AC does. equipment alone. Your not really saving much with mini-split other then to not having to install ducts in the rooms which is often difficult with head room in a basement. Good luck.Helpful Reply
