I need advise, any suggestions to fill the void at end of each tread?

We removed the carpet on our stairs and would have liked to stain the treads, but the wood is horrible so we will have to paint them instead. I have started patching nail/ staple holes and imperfections. We plan on painting the treads and handrails black with everything else painted white. I have caulked the ends of one tread, but will need more to try and get it level with the tread.

    Try Quarter Round molding

Caulk will not last and eventually fail! Wood expands and contracts. I would continue with the caulk even though some of the gaps are really wide. If the caulk fails in time. Then you can use 3/8" quarter round molding to cover the gaps.

I recently did the same with my carpeted stairs and had the same issue. We put beadboard on the risers but the gaps still showed because they were on an angle. As suggested by others quarter round did the trick & it looks great!

Thank you for the suggestions, but I do t think trim will work where the tread rounds over on the edges.
  • take some wood filler and fill all of those holes from the carpet. then go over each tread with sandpaper...80 grit up to 220. use your hands to feel if its smooth. it should feel like a baby's butt before you even think about painting. give it a coat of Zinsser oil base primer. sand it smooth again with fine paper. wipe clean. Now you are ready for paint. If it doesn't feel smooth under your hand, it's not going to feel smooth under feet and it won't look very good under your paint. As for the gaps on the side, quarter round will work. prime it and paint one coat first before you nail it down.

Your sandi g tips were right on the mark. Holes are now filed with wood filler and everything is smooth as a babies butt for sure. Thank you for great suggestions.

Black is pretty but keep in mind it shows footprints and dust very easily.

I would calk before you paint. In gaps larger than 1/4" put calking backer rod in and use the kinf of calk that expands and contract and us paintable. ..ps use portch and floor paint...its flexible instead of cracking

If i didnt allready i would also suggest portch and floor paint...its flexible to a degree and wood expands/contracts

You could try using Bondo (automotive filler). It has about the same expansion & contraction rate as the wood. It will work better than wood putty; caulk is more of a rubber & will not expand/contract the same. Just mix it, fill in the cracks &/or holes, & sand it smooth. Paint should adhere to it.
