Well metering in Florida
He smiled and told me there is legislation in Tallahassee to meter wells. Why? We let the bottled water people steal our water & now the state will try to make us pay for well & city water, too.

KMS Woodworks on Mar 25, 2012Water is the "next" oil....limited supply limited production...increases in price. Regulation and politics will come into play as it did in the oil industry decades ago...Lobbyist's with money will "influence" policy. As in any situation you need to follow the money trail.Helpful Reply

Kevin M. Veler, Law Office of on Mar 26, 2012I did find one article that suggests the stated purpose is to understand the impact of domestic wells on the aquifer. Currently they "guess" at the use. Given FL's growing water issues, it may ultimately be needed to understand the impact of development. As Kevin noted the east is now beginning to face water issues that the western states have faced for year. http://tinyurl.com/bo7jpd7 As for all the politics, I agree they can seem absurd and very tilted toward those who can afford the lobbyist. But this is a construction/home blog not a political blog.Helpful Reply

Sherrie S on Mar 26, 2012Kevin, understanding the well impact is OK with me. What will bother me is when they make me pay for the city water I currently pay for and then they decide to utilize the meter & charge me for the well I also paid for. By the way, I'm thankful this is not a political blog cause I love hometalk just the way it is.Helpful Reply

Jackie on Mar 26, 2012I moved on my property 20 some years ago cause the city water was so expensive......I got a $400 bill and they refused to correct it. NO way will I pay for my own well water.......if its on your land it is considered an asset same as if you had coal , trees, or oil on your property. NO WAY !!!!!!Helpful Reply

Sherrie S on Mar 26, 2012Kelly, don't exale carbon or you will be charged more someday. I have an 87 year old renter that loved the home until she found the waterbill was over $500. I paid it because I thought it was an anamoly. It was not so after 4 months of me paying I had the well installed and the bill for city water is now $30 or less a month. I thought that ended the problem. Maybe Not.Helpful Reply

HandyANDY - Handyman & All Repairs, LLC on Mar 26, 2012Well, it's true that in theory you own your land straight to the center of the earth and straight up to heaven. However, ownership is really best viewed as owning a bundle of "sticks" or rights. When the use of your "rights" goes against the common good it can be regulated ie you own clear to heaven but you couldn't build anything that would violated covenants, restrict airspace or even unduly shade a neighbors house. Water is the same kind of thing...it is becoming increasing precious and it can & will be regulated.Helpful Reply

Sherrie S on Mar 27, 2012HandyAndy, wouldn't it be nice if the gov't started with the big water users such as golf courses and the companies that take our water, bottle it and sell it everywhere?Helpful Reply

KMS Woodworks on Mar 27, 2012Golf courses in the desert make even less sense...Las Vegas, Phoenix, Palm Springs...etc. The list goes on and on. I just blows my mind when I see that...that and bottled drinking water in the stores at $8-10 a gallon (when bought in 16 to 20 oz sizes)...wasteful and irresponsible.Helpful Reply
