Carmel Callan on May 23, 2013it looks like an angel's trumpet, datura...though I never saw one with the stripes like that. Beautiful! Where do you live? In a place like Florida it is a perennial, but in colder climates you have to dig it up in the winter to take indoors.Helpful Reply

Nancy Hand on May 23, 2013Carmel, its not a datura Angel's Trumpet It kinda looks like the blooms. The foliage is a type of lily. I'm from So. GA and when they bloom its going to rain. But its not a rain lily. Very pretty!Helpful Reply

Pam Cates on May 24, 2013These are all over the southern U. S. at every old home place. Never have I heard them called by any particular name. I have some that were given to me 30 years ago by an elderly lady which I refer to as my peppermint lily. I planted only one and now have dozens...absolutely beautiful when they bloom (the entire summer). You have peeked my curiosity. I WILL find out somehow. Edited note: I do believe it is Milk and Wine Lily after researching.Helpful Reply

Judy on May 25, 2013It is a Crinum latifolium. A member of the Amaryllis family. So are Bare Naked Ladies but they have foliage that dies back during the summer & in the fall a bare stalk emerges with a cluster of pink flowers on top. Hence the "bare naked" part. I believe the Crinum is supposed to have medicinal properties.Helpful Reply

-
Bev on May 25, 2013In my area we call them "Resurrection Lilly " or naked lady Lilly. They have a wonderful smell. The leaves come up early and die down, then reappear later when it blooms in August. Hence the "Resurrection" name.Helpful Reply

Judy on May 26, 2013NOT Naked Lady or Surprise lily! This plant has a flower stalk coming up out of foliage & is blooming in the spring. Naked Lady (surprise lily) sends up a flower stalk out of bare dirt, in the fall, after all its foliage has died off. This is Crinum latifolium. Both are members of the Amaryllis family but are totally different plants.Helpful Reply
