Artistic Freedom

William Heistand
by William Heistand
In as much as I am painting in the same space as I am woodworking, I will on occasion layer detail images of the works together and compare the differences and similarities. It is a very useful exercise for the compositional muscles and can generate ideas for the next project. It is another method by which to make artistic design choices.
In memory of my father, who, with his entire generation, sacrificed so that we can continue to tend our gardens, homes and families.
Watercolor and Walnut - Curves over straight, the differences compete and compliment.
An example of insetting small watercolors under glass, in lieu of tile, in an arts and crafts fireplace mantel.
Watercolor over Carved Cherry - The arch motif is central to both compositions.
Watercolor and Wood - The alignments between the two detail images is intriguing.
David Drexel Heistand - having paid the price for my artistic freedom. "Thank You Dad!"
