Enjoy Your Backyard Fire Pit With These Easy Homemade Firestarters

Easy
Last year we finally bought a portable steel fire pit so we could enjoy sitting around a fire at home instead of having to be at a campground. We love it! One of the first things I did was make up some of these easy homemade firestarters that can be made completely from recycled items. I used a cardboard egg carton, dryer lint, and a block of wax I had around the house (or you can use old candles). I also used a recycled tin can for melting the wax. The basic process is to put some dryer lint in each of the egg carton sections, pour the melted wax over the dryer lint, let it harden, and then cut the egg carton sections apart.
When you make your fire, you simply put a few of these firestarters in the pit with the wood and light the firestarters first. The firestarters light quickly and easily and burn well, which helps the wood catch and gets the fire started. We were really pleased with how well they worked.
You can click the link below to read the full instructions I wrote up last summer. We're looking forward to lots of fun backyard fires this summer too!

I use dryer lint & used cooking oil from our deep fryer. When it was time to replace the oil in our deep fryer, I kept the old oil in a container in the fridge until I saved enough dryer lint. I use an empty coffee container & put in the lint (about 2 inches at a time), add the oil, making sure that the lint gets completely wet, then add more dryer lint, then oil & so on until I have a full container. I use the big plastic coffee container. Then i use a couple of chunks of the oil soaked lint, then kindling, then wood chunks. I light my lint & it catches fire & gets everything going & wa la! A beautiful fire! I'll try adding wax in my next batch. Thank you for sharing.
