How to paint the fabric on upholstered furniture...cheap and easy

Question

I have been reading about painting fabric on upholstered furniture...I have a chair I would like to do that to, but not sure what type of paint to go with...is currently a small wood chair w/upholstered seat and back.  I would love to 'shabby chic' the wood in a weathered cream color and then paint the fabric.  Not real creative...does anyone have any inexpensive, easy ways they recommend?

I checked with my 'jack of all trades' husband. Use flat paint in the color you like and apply with paint rollers (they come in different sizes) and a brush. PLease post a pic of the chair before you re-do it and after. I am eager to see how it turns out.

It sounds like a fun project! I've used Annie Sloan Chalk Paint and soft wax to paint fabric. The technique includes wetting the fabric and diluting the paint as well as 3 or more coats to get an even look. It varies depending on the type of fabric, too.
