Most stuck on food will burn off the next time you're heating your grill. Use a wire grill brush and be sure to clean spills as they occur. Your grills manufacturer should have recommendations for cleaning in its owners guide or online.

if there steel or cast iron, put them in couple of plastic bags and pour ammonia in and seal tight. Leave in warm sun for couple of hours so the fumes that are created will soften and remove the gunk. Remove from plastic and garden hose them off. Works like a charm. We also use this method on our inside stove grates and pans. No abrasive scrubbing and works every time.
  • To extend the life of your grill, clean the grill (just as you do pots and pans) after every use. I break down and clean my grill in my kitchen sink with Dawn and a sponge designated to the grill and then wash the sponge in the washer or dishwasher. Be sure to clean all the removable parts too like the metal pieces over the burner. and the grease collector under the grill. It takes a bit of time to clean the grill but it is well worth it. good luck

Place foil on the grates and turn the grill on high, leave on long enough for the residue to burn off, cool the grates down and clean with dawn and water.

If you live in the country and have grass all over..when finished cooking and grates have cooled, take them and place them out in the grass overnight. Can't explain it but the dew and the green grass clean the grates! I just pick them up and wash/wipe them off!

Heat grates until very hot; stuck food will turn to char. Turn off heat and scrape with wire brush; should be very clean. Then wipe with salad oil soaked towel to season. Residual oil will burn off next cooking cycle. Thereafter, try to brush grates after each use to keep build up to a minimum and re-oil after each use. Food won't stick either.
