Which type of tile is better ceramic or porcelin for kitchen floor?

Sia@South 47th on May 31, 2013Hi Jeannine! There are soooo many great upgrades in the 'tile world' now! Very durable products to meet whatever style you have in mind. Porcelain is usually more 'durable' than ceramic due to its longer dry time. And it resists the cracking with freezing and thawing if used outdoors. xoHelpful Reply

Alone Eagle Remodeling, LLC. on May 31, 2013You'll want a thru body porcelain which is solid the whole way through the body (no clay body) which will not show a different color if it gets chipped or cracked (from maybe dropping a pot or pan). :)Helpful Reply

True Identity Concepts on May 31, 2013Since you are selecting tile for a high traffic kitchen application, porcelain would be my recommendation. Both products are man-made. However, the porcelain is fired at a higher temperature making it less likely to absorb moisture and withstand cracking and chipping. A color body or through-body porcelain composition with a higher PEI (Porcelain Enamel Institute) rating(PEI 4 or 5) is best for your concerns of chipping/cracking and high-traffic kitchen application. If it does chip, the color is throughout the tile rather than a surface application and nearly invisible. In terms of cracking, you should have not issue if the subfloor is even and the right setting materials are used based on your product selection.Helpful Reply
