Burlap Rollup Blinds

I've been wanting new curtains since I moved here a year ago. I finally took the time to make them. Very inexpensive and simple to make. The most difficult part was getting the awful burlap smell (a very chemical smell) out of the fabric. Three separate times I soaked them in the washing machine for 10-12 hours. I then dried them in the dryer and hung them out in the wind for a whole day. Finally........Honestly they plugged up my dryer vent to the outside so be careful.
Find your fabric and pre wash, this is the most difficult step. Burlap has a terrible odor. I also learned that the color I chose which was a lighter color turned darker when washed. I actually am happy about this. :)
I sewed a 3" casing at the top to hang on the iron rods. Hemmed the bottom. I pressed them with a hot iron and turned the hems. This worked great and the stitching I used was zigzag with matching thread, can't see the stitches at all.
Last step was to cut 1 1/2" black grosgrain ribbon for ties. In my instance it took 18 ' per panel. I tied the ribbon to the distance I wanted them to hang and then rolled the blinds to that point. When inserted into the ribbon I pulled the sides of the drapes up and let the top two rolls unwind. Final step- stand back and admire!
