I'm in the high desert also. Our sprinklers are set for twice a week. In the last week, I've noticed aphids all over the rose bushes, which also cause the leaves to look like this. Maria, have you inspected closely for aphids? Is there a sticky or shiny substance on any of the leaves?

Readers, should I use sevin dust or something else?

I think possibly black spot pick off on black leaves spray with detergent and water mixture or buy the liquid spray from garden shop! Of course, I may be totally wrong!

Could be rust or black spot. DON'T water from overhead & give each rose lots of CIRCULATION , that is space between each one. Water when it's sunny so leaves will dry out. Remove all brown or yellow leaves...DO NOT leave them on the ground under the plant. Apply a thick mulch under plant to prevent spread of fungus. This is caused by a fungus which overwinters in rose canes & fallen rose leaves. Very difficult to control so try to buy resistant varieties. Good luck.

You might want to mulch around your flowers will help to keep them from drying out.

It might be a good idea the transfer it to an area where it can get morning sun. I had a rose that did the same thing and it was because it was in shade until later in the day and all of the dew was sitting on the leaves.

When watering roses, water at the base of the plant not the leaves. Also it is better to water in the morning rather than evening so that any water on the leaves can dry. At night it just causes more moisture on the leaves and the result is rust and black spot.

watering is probably the most likely reason for the brown spots but an easy solution to the bugs is when you do water them use a watering can and put dawn dish soap in it, just a squirt into it everytime u refill. i have 32 rose bushes in my yard and they get watered daily when its hot but i always do it before the sun comes up so they have the day to absorbe all the water. but spring an fall i dont water at all. if its below 75 degrees i dont have an issue.

It is black spot; it's fungal and it comes from foliar watering and poor air circulation around the plant. Watering from the top splashes fungal spores back on the foliage. Remove all dropped foliage from around the plant. You can try a spray of baking soda, water, and dish soap. Otherwise, I use a rose dust with Captan in it and put it in a sock and gently shake it around and on the rose bush. It readily gets rid of the fungus. Just don't apply on a breezy day. Early morning is best. Use ...»
precautions when using pesticides. Rose are heavy feeders and drinkers; keeping them healthy will keep the diseases and insects at bay. Also buy resistant varieties. Many roses are resistant to black spot and other diseases. Keep your pruning tools clean too so you don't spread the pathogens.

Yes, talked to my aunt, the gardner in the family. She says to much water, will cause brown spots like that. For roses she recommends soaker house laid at ground level, cover with clean mulch 3-4 inches and only a good watering twice a week... Side note ,she waters on Sundays and Wednesdays. On Sunday she turns on the water before church and turns off after church.. She says sunday morning church is nurishment for her soul, so the roses should be nourished as well. LOL)

Roses need to be watered at the soil with a slow drip. I always put the hose at the bottom and let the water just leak out slowly. do not water during sunlight or too early before sun exposure as well.

Remove all the discolored leaves. Mix 3 tablespoons of Apple C Vingear to 1 gal. of water and spray bush from top to bottom. Does this once a week until clear. Be sure to wash all tools that You are using.

The tiny bugs you are referring to are aphids.Use sevin dust to control. Rust or Black Spot is caused by too much water. Roses need at least 6 hrs of sun. They also need air circulation around them. Remove affected leaves and those that have fallen off. Water deeply at base and wait a few days. Apply fungicide specifically for Black Spot or rust (available at hardware store). Fertilize in early spring. Prune before dormant season.

Neem oil is good for insects & Dieases; that is if it has any. But only spray it in the early morning or late afternoon with the Neem oil & water. Its probably Whiteflies. Neem oil will control this too. Also with Roses; you need to keep the area around it free of any leaves or petals that fall around the plant; this keeps Dieases at bay; and if you don't have Mulch around them; put some around them; but don't put it up to the plant; this can cause it to rot. Good Luck! I love my Roses!

I had a prolific white rose ,just loaded, but every rose would have brown in the middle & would fall off. We moved it by itself & will see what happens. Any ideas about this--why--what to do for it?

This is somewhat expected in roses. Buy black spot spray...in addition to spraying, be sure to pull and dispose of damaged leaves.

Check to see if spray should be mixed with baby shampoo so it sticks.

I agree with Christiana L. Dawn detergent is great when mixed with water and sprayed on. I live in Florida (lots of buggies) and Dawn is a lifesaver. Even helps our dogs with flea problems.
