Douglas Hunt on Apr 18, 2012If it's only oozing from one spot, that's a good sign, as it likely means your tree has developed a fungal disease called pitch canker. The fungus gains entry from a physical injury to the tree. Trees generally grow out of pitch canker. If you take a close look at your tree and see many holes with sawdust around them, or on the ground below them, that's probably a sign of pine bark borer, which is a far more serious probably, and will probably doom your tree. For some more information on pitch canker, including photos you can compare with your tree, see this publication from the University of Florida Extension Service: http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/fr298Helpful Reply

Joey G on Apr 19, 2012IF the tree is brown and it's oozing, there is obviously something bad going on. Hopefully Walter will respond to your response to him. He is obviously an authority on this. But unless this tree holds some sentimental value to you, I would just get rid of it more than likely. Break some twigs off some of the branches and see if ther eis any green left under the bark. If it's brown and brittle, that part of the tree is dead and not coming back. Sometimes I'll start at the very top and outsides of the tree, breaking twigs and branches as I get closer to the trunk, looking for green. if I find no green, the tree is probably a goner. If you do find green, it may live but if yo uhave dead branches, it may never look right again.Helpful Reply

Shirley R on Apr 21, 2012Yes, Mr. Reeves it is all brown on top of the tree/pine needles also. It is a tall pine tree and the stuff is yellowly/white coming out of the tree. It is weird because it was alive during the so called winter we had. I guess I need to have it taken down which is OK!!! Thanks, everyone for your help!!Helpful Reply
