the homemade plaster of Paris concoction is easy to do but bear in mind it can be acidic over time and can damage unsealed wood furniture. Not recommended for raw wood. Useful on re-stained wood.

If you are set on making your own chalk type paint, know that latex paints cover about 97 sq ft per quart versus a real chalk paint (non latex brands) cover up to 194 sq ft per quart. So you really don't save money. Wear a mask when mixing, any of those powders typically used can cause tiny tears in your lungs and aggravate your breathing. If you google . Making chalk paint with calcium carbonate powder. The calcium carbonate gives the chalky texture. After many days searching and reviewing. Turns out the calcium carbonate ingredient seems favourable in comparison to plaster of Paris etc. I haven't done it yet so I don't have a personal opinion. Just sharing what I encountered in my search

I use calcium carbonate (Amazon has it fairly reasonable price for a 1lb bag and free shipping with a Prime Membership). The bag has measurements, but I don't like my chalk paint as thick as those measurements so use less, like maybe 1 or 2 tablespoons to a pint jar/jelly jar of paint.

I fill a quart jar with paint ( 3 inches from the rim), put in 1 1/2 tbsp of calcium carbonate, 1 tbsp of Plaster of Paris and 1 1/2 capfuls of Floetrol ( or any brand that helps flow to remove brush strokes). Stir and then shake very well.

I have gone the route of making my own chalk paint with the calcium carbonate and latex paint, it was hard to get all the lumps out, kind of like gravy and flour. Amazon does sell a rustoleum chalk paint, which is relatively inexpensive, vice the Anne Sloan at $40+ per pint.

When I make my own chalky type paint, I mix 2 1/2 TBLS Plaster of Paris with 1 1/2 TBLS of cool water (mix well, no lumps) then mix well into 1 cup of paint. I usually use Behr matte (it's in a red can).
