He used 3 quarter plywood. Glue the tile to the wood in whatever design u like, just like u were doing a tile job but smaller. Then frame It and paint it.

Some tile stores will let you put a bin in the back and will throw all the broken, mismatched tile in there. I have a huge tile collection.

Debi M. you could use concrete backer board Durock or Hardibacker available at home imp. stores outside it would be better to use those because it will withstand loads of water and last long
