Easy Garden Trellis

When you drive up to our home the first thing you see is the carport. Not a very pretty view. I have been working to distract from it by adding some architectural interest to the area. One easy way is with a DIY Garden Trellis. I used salvaged lumber but you can find all the wood needed easily at your local lumberyard. Start by cutting your 4x4's to desired length. Next cut two 2x6x48" boads. I cut a decorative curve out of each end with a jig saw. I attached them to my 4x4's with screws. The inside measurement between the 4x4's is 23". Then I cut two 2x2's at 23" and attached them to the 4x4's with screws at an angle (predrilling to avoid splitting the wood). These will support the trellis. Next I added five 2x2x18" pieces to the top attaching with nails. Because my trellis was going to be buried in dirt I decided to make "feet" out of pressure treated lumber. Also because my wood was salvaged and it wasn't treated wood or cedar. You could also use pier pads if you have the room or just bury the 4x4's. Just know they will eventually rot. I primed and painted everything before I stood it up then added 2x4's to attach to the wall. I used a welded wire panel (normally used in concrete work) for my trellis because it was sturdy and galvanized. Plus I just like the way it looks. You could use wood trellis, or fencing. Whatever you like for the center. It's really an easy fun weekend project that gives a lot of interest to a space. To finish it off I planted a Clematis to climb my trellis. Lovin the way it looks!

Kathy Bitzan on Jul 13, 2016I have been looking for an idea to keep my wisteria off of the front porch. It crawls in every where. Any other idea are welcome also.
