Heather (New House New Home) on Jun 13, 2013Thanks for the suggestion of weigela - I'm pretty sure that's what it is after all. I've just never seen one that large before - most of them are usually no bigger than 4 or 5 feet. But it's an old shrub. Now all I have to do it find out which variety and how to tame it.Helpful Reply

Douglas Hunt on Jun 13, 2013Heather, here's an interesting post comparing three pruning methods of weigela. In my experience, pruning definitely helps them. http://www.obsessiveneuroticgardener.com/2011/08/pruning-results-for-weigela-wine-and.htmlHelpful Reply

Heather (New House New Home) on Jun 13, 2013Douglas Hunt - I love John and his blog. He's always so informative. If I didn't need the privacy, I would cut the shrub back to almost nothing and start over. We did that with an overgrown spirea and it's doing well.Helpful Reply
