Hmmmm....wonder what the scuff is? At any rate..... In our former home we had sheet vinyl floors in the the kitchen and bath. They were in excellent shape (no cuts, tears, etc) so I primed and painted them. As in your floor, the texture showed through making them look quite nice. You'll still see the 'grout' lines in your floor if you paint. In the bathroom, the flooring got stained when the plumber was fixing the toilet. Could not get it cleaned! Ugh! I painted over the floor too and it looked brand new. I know, you've asked how to get the permanent scuff off... Depending on what the scuff is, there may be some things that could work. Not knowing what caused the scuff, I'm at a bit of a loss as to how to remove it. Wish I could be more helpful. What have you tried so far? That would be helpful to know too. Let us know....I'd love to see what others suggest as well.

It's actually a scuff that has rubbed off the top of the vinyl (bargain vinyl, although it's Armstrong).

I would give WD40 a try. It takes scuff marks off paintwork, Permanent marker off whiteboards etc. Hope it works for you.

For deep scuff marks even in old linoleum, the only thing I have found to work is a very small amount of WD40 and a cloth rag. Spray the scuff wait a couple of seconds then rub it off. If it is really deep you may have to repeat the process. When the scuff is completely gone, CLEAN up the area with SOAPY dish water or someone WILL slip and fall. For future scuff marks, spray the cloth before rubbing.

BON AMI powdered cleaner is a non-scratch go-to for any sort of mark; wet the area and use the BON AMI on a sponge. Then you might want to wax the spot to protect where any scratches might have penetrated the top layer of plastic on the vinyl.

Acetone nail polish remover should do the job.

@Kathy I have seen acetone actually dissolve floor tile! Either WD-40 or lighter fluid should remove it. If not, gentle use of a Magic Eraser might.

Of course, trying to get the scuff out is what you should do first. If that doesn't work and you kept any of the flooring that was left over, you can cut out the square (I'd cut on the outside of the grout lines) and replace it with a new one, securing with Liquid Nail (be sure to get some under the edges of the flooring itself, so both the new square and the old flooring is secure around the "patch") If you have no leftovers, you should be able to find a match at a flooring store- you have a very popular pattern of flooring.

Our bathtub, resurfaced some months before, has become quite rust stained as someone left a shower running and we weren't aware of it and you cannot use cleanser on the resurfaced tub. What would remove the heavy rust stain from the tub without damaging it?
