MN Mom on May 13, 2016Black walnut us more toxic than English walnut. My local arboretum has a great website with a listing of plants and trees that are more and less susceptible to the walnut trees. http://www.extension.umn.edu/garden/yard-garden/trees-shrubs/toxicity-of-black-walnuts-towards-other-plants/Helpful Reply

Dee on May 13, 2016Thanks for posting this info-I've been fighting a black walnut in my neighbor's yard, which hangs over our fence. Finally wised up this year and put all my tomatoes and peppers into pots.Helpful Reply

Barb Rosen on May 13, 2016Walnut toxicity extends to the roots which remain in the soil after the tree is cut down. It inhibits susceptible plants' respiration nearby. Build the soil up with good compost and have a look at this: http://www.omafra.gov.on.ca/english/crops/facts/info_walnut_toxicity.htmHelpful Reply

Wennie anderson on May 14, 2016it would be years before the toxicity would leave the soil. It is not worth cutting a good walnut tree down. Just enjoy the tree and learn what plants you can have under and by the tree. Goggle this information. I have 2 black walnut trees in my backyard and still have a lovely landscaped area. Hostas and day lilies , wild grape vine, maple and lots more can be grown by and under the nut trees. Not tomatoes they do not survive. However If you plant them in pots they can live and produce.Helpful Reply

Wennie anderson on May 14, 2016I have a blue spruce tree that is about 20 feet high and about 30 years old planted it when our oldest child was born and it is doing well with our black walnut trees. One of them is about 100 feet from the largest tree.Helpful Reply
