My grandson has bunk beds so the bedskirt wasn't needed on the top bunk. Pillow Shams just aren't something a 7 year old needs. So, I re-purposed them into a valance for the double window in his room.
I started with this.
First, I deconstructed the pillow shams so the fabric would lay flat. I cut the bedskirt away from deck.
Cut close to the edge.
Next I pieced the pillow sham pieces together to make one long piece of fabric.
Measuring against his old nursery valance
After I got the size right I cut another piece the same size from lining fabric.

I made tabs to hang the valance from similar to the old valance, but I made less of them and made them wider.
I added a little "celestial" embellishment with this sparkly ribbon. I came across the bottom and up both sides with the ribbon.
Sew the tabs to the valance upside down so that when you turn it they will be right side up. Then sew the liner on leaving one end open to turn it.
After you turn it just press that open end and sew it shut. All done!
Hang it on the rod already there and you've got a completed "space theme" room suitable for a 7 year old boy.
All done for the price of the liner and ribbon.

I go to a thrift store to leave and buy...Love their things for pittance, but they throw out so much stuff. I generally pick up the sheets and yes, shams and bedskirts. some are still in original bags.??????? They are never dirty, but I do bring them home and wash and hang on line in sun. Some have embroidered edging. For my country home that is wonderful...Tried to sell them at yard sale. no luck. Bottom line, found set of white with blue and white checked edging tiebacks. Well, I made a summer maxi skirt to wear for the Memorial day weekend coming up. Put 2 curtains together, took off the part for the rod and used for tie belt. absolutely gorgeous. I absolutely love making something from nothing.

Me, too. It gives me a real sense of satisfaction. Great idea for the skirt.
