Help with range hood...big,old,ugly...

Linda kelley on May 22, 2016It usually hangs on the cabinets above. I replaced mine and put a microwave there instead. If I'm cooking on the stove top, I just turn the fan on my microwave. If not, they have spray paint for appliances.Helpful Reply

JoAnn on May 23, 2016I think you can remove it. If so, remove it and clean it very well. I would go to Ace or True Value and speak to some one there. They have so many staff members that really know what they are doing. They can advise you on the type of paint to use. They could let you know if and how it needs to be sanded down.Helpful Reply

CrowEyes on May 23, 2016If the fan part of this appliance is not working, consider replacing the entire unit. If you plan on a DIY, make sure you turn off the breaker (and test the line) before disconnecting. Consider pricing over at Sears.Helpful Reply

Johnchip on May 23, 2016This does not look like it is venting out, just circulating the air. I would just get rid of it and paint under the cabinet with an enamel paint you can easily keep clean. If you need to vent, use a small window fan on exhaust to get the air in the room moved out, this is only recirculating the air and cooking odors anyway. These unvented range hoods tend to just become grease traps and stink the room up more in the long run than help.Helpful Reply

3cookies on May 23, 2016Open cabinet..if pipe goes up it is venting out and worth keeping. There is appliance paint that you could use or replace it entirely. It's not complicated but you would need help holding it in place.Helpful Reply

Shirley Bolton McSilvers on May 23, 2016Sometimes it just needs a good cleaning. Also you can either spray paint it or get the brushed chrome appliance covering like they use on dishwashers. HVe fun with it. And go with what your budget can afford. Could also look for a used one.Helpful Reply

Theresa Smith on May 23, 2016Well,, since the home is so old (I lived in one this vintage in the past); you don't know how much grease and gunk is up inside the works. I would investigate to see if you could just get one to replace it reasonably. Remember, a mobile is like a tract home - many things are not "standard"....so measure, measure, measure. Hope this helps.Helpful Reply

Barbara on May 23, 2016I had one similar to this when we had our mobile home. I took it out to the patio and spray washed it with degreaser dish soap, replaced the filter as it was just too 'yucky' to clean up (I think walmart and HD has them). After a few days drying in the sun, I went at it with a black matte spray paint inside and out. When that dried, I spray painted it a verdigris copper color to blend with our kitchen. I made sure I got 'fire safe' spray paint, especially with a gas stove. It turned out great and lasted another 12 years with gentle cleaning until we sold the mobile and bought our conventional home. Total cost at the time was about $15.00, but it would probably be $20 or so now.Helpful Reply

Betty Robinson on May 23, 2016If you can unscrew it to clean, degrease all. In any event, spray-paint interior flat black. Purchase copper sheathing (by the roll), measure, cut to size - leaving enough overhang to wrap to inside, glue in place. You'll likely want to poly. the copper to make cleaning easier later. You can also consider creating a hammered effect on copper, with a wash of black to "age."Helpful Reply

Bobbie Littlefield on May 23, 2016Love the suggestions above...but I would take it out, take it to a self serve car wash with degreaser and blast it til its clean. Then I would take it to an electrostatic painter or car painter and price my options. Harder finish and some are gorgeous!Helpful Reply

Bobbie Littlefield on May 23, 2016PS-I have the same overhead lighting problem in my kitchen. Covered the acrylic with the static cling stained glass looking paper available at Lowes or Home Depot. Looks lovely now-short term till I focus an electrician....Helpful Reply

CrowEyes on May 23, 2016It would be easier if you could take the entire hood out. Consider cleaning it first with a citrus spray ( see pic), which will break down any grease. Wash to remove any citrus oil (Dawn). Sand with a light -grain sandpaper. Prime (spray). Paint (spray). Reinstall. Two glasses of Merlot.Helpful Reply

Jennie Lee on May 23, 2016I don't think it's worth prettying it up until it WORKS. The first thing I'd do is take pictures from every angle and write down what make and model your trailer is, and any information you see on a label on the hood. Then I'd go to either a trailer supply or some place like Lowe's and see what a new one would cost. Then find out what an electrician would charge to fix the light and fan. Then you'll know whether to fix it or replace it. If you do decide to keep it, AFTER it works right, if you want to make it look nice, You might want to cover it with copper, like Betty suggested, or maybe stainless steel? And, if you paint it, use a light color underneath; you need all the light you can get.Helpful Reply

Jon Dupree on May 23, 2016scrub/replace the light bulb cover, a replacement fan can prolly be found on the net cheap enough (two wires and two or three screws) clean the hood give it a light sanding and spay it with some hi-temp rustoleum paint (tell the guy at the hardware store you need paint for your BBQ grill.) Finding a new replacement hood will most likely be rather costly.Helpful Reply

Bernice H on May 31, 2016Hi everyone..an update...so far......not a done deal yet but we decided to go with a new hood. HOWEVER...it is not the same. It is a standard 30 inch,ductible...with a flat back that goes against the wall which will not happen here. So we will have to do cosmetics on it,which is ok. The problems became more evident. Yes a thorough cleaning would make it look good, but the fan and light and plastic screen still presented a problem. To get a big one like we have...expensive. Even this standard one was 99.00 plus metal pieces. I just will not pay more. I rarely cook! But don't tell anybody! This is venting, some were a little cheaper but did not vent. So we will just hang it and paint around it...make the back pretty....whatever it takes! It will be 106 today and hotter through the week,no one feels like cleaning the biggie out there in this heat, especially if the fan and light won't be improved. We have the handyman for a couple of days..gotta make hay while he is here. The lights have been installed, not quite as bright as the fluorescents..but I will get used to them. Then the major painting of the kitchen to fix the sloppy paint job that was in here. Fun in the sun! Tata for now! (Just remember any plans can change at any time! )Helpful Reply
