Do Service Berry plants grow in central fl?

Douglas Hunt on May 10, 2012No, Charlynn, it is too hot here for amelanchiers. The only place in the state they will grow is the far western panhandle.Helpful Reply

Douglas Hunt on May 11, 2012Yes, beautyberry does very well here. I just planted one this spring. If you are looking for a small-sized native tree with a white bloom, you might consider a fringetree, Chionanthus virginicus. There is a dwarf form native to central Florida, Chionanthus pygmaeus, that is endangered.Helpful Reply

Douglas Hunt on May 12, 2012If you are interested in native plants, Charlynn, you might want to check out Biosphere Nursery in Winter Garden or The Natives in Davenport, which would probably be more of a drive for you. The latter has more limited hours and you need to call before you go, but they do carry the pygmy fringe tree.Helpful Reply
