Bought these cute little step tables and I truly had no idea exactly what I wanted to do with them. I knew I wanted to go dark, which is out of my comfort zone, completely.
Started by cleaning and light sanding... as usual. There was a missing piece of trim so I had to build that... my first time doing anything like that!
So i used clay to mold a shape of the one next to it... then i used bondo and placed it in the mold -- let it dry and peeled away the clay.. i cleaned it up much better than this pic is showing but i forgot to take another pic! Then I used wood glue to attach to the spot!
I knew I wanted to decoupage over the leather on the bottom... I have only done it 2 times before.. .so I cut this awesome wrapping paper I found to size... put it on.. and realized that the pattern was the WRONG WAY! Oh well, had to remove all of that glue and paper.. and start again! Learned a lesson there!
After the wrapping paper was applied, I used a white wax to dry brush around and highlight the details...
I knew it needed something else though. I knew I was going to make the handles a gold... so I thought maybe if I added a little gold to the drawer front by dry brushing... and it looked odd because it was the only gold on the entire thing (besides hardware) -- So then I decided to add it to the highlights... and voila! The piece started coming alive!

Gold around the leather area... top looks torn on purpose!

Love the result! Can you use a more shinny finish over chalk paint? I noticed they always mention wax, which doesnt give more shine

I have these two exact tables that were my grandmothers. I recently painted my room and want to match the table instead of throwing them away, This is the exact project I was looking for. I will have to take before and after photos. Thank you for the inspiration.
