Flag Day is June 14 in the U.S.A. and this Patriotic Vase will be perfect to display some red, white and blue flowers!
found an old dirty vase hiding in the back of one of my kitchen cabinets. It was the perfect free subject for a Patriotic Vase made using the totally awesome Gel stain, paint and glaze --- Unicorn Spit!
Dirty vase - hidden in cabinet for years!
First I washed the dirty vase really well to make sure there was no gunk left on it! You can also wipe it down with denatured alcohol to make sure there is no oily residue.
Vase with Mod Podge, drying - SPiT is next!
Then you use a sponge brush to paint Mod Podge (I used matte finish, but you can get a dishwasher safe version too). This is a base coat so that the Unicorn Spit will stick to the glass.
I put a large rubber band around the middle of the vase so the blue and red would stay separate and not blend together. I painted two coats of "Molly Red Pepper" on the bottom half and two coats of "Blue Thunder" on the top half. I made sure each coat dried before applying the next coat.
After waiting for the red and blue to dry (about an hour) I cut the rubber band off and used "White Ning" on the red to create stripes with a small brush. I then used a piece of sponge to dab white on the blue area to create the impression of stars.
Once again, I let the white dry. Then I added some "Zia Teal" to the top half of the vase for some variety. I used my sponge and dabbed it on.
After the Unicorn Spit is completely dry, you need to seal it with an oil based lacquer. I used Krylon Colormaster Clear Gloss spray. It is quick drying and gave the vase a great shine. This is the most important step when using Unicorn Spit. When the colors dry and are unsealed they become dull, but the oil based sealer just brings the colors alive again.
Sealed and ready for finishing touches
This picture shows the vase after it was sealed with 2 coats of lacquer.
My last step was to get out the red, blue, and natural jute cord and use my glue gun to attach it around the middle of the vase. It hides where the colors come together and just adds a little extra detail.
And now it is finished and ready for some beautiful Red, White and Blue flowers to commemorate our fallen Solders! Happy Memorial Day Everyone! Happy Crafting with Unicorn Spit!
