Garden Oasis on Porch!

Having suffered droughts for the past several years in Atlanta, I found a better way to have a garden...bring the color and flowers to my front porch! Old furniture, flower pots, birdhouses and faded garden items were painted with beautiful pots of flower added. Faded became fabulous!

Porches are the quintessential room of the south. You have done a beautiful job that just invites friends and family to "sit a spell and have some sweet tea". Thanks for sharing

Reply to Jeanette S. asking about the paint. We wiped down the rocker with bleach to clean it, being very careful not to get it too wet. Then after a few days of drying, we used a spray paint in a can from Home Depot that has a 2X covering and dries in just a few minutes. We only put on 1 coat for now...we want it to sort of "cure" in the summer heat before we do another coat.

Jeanette S...I failed to tell you the brand name on the paint was Krylon. Theirs covers the best and the colors are brighter....love them.

Is the porch a concrete floor? It looks rather like you have a light painted hue to it. I just love this, have a duplicate old glider and will be painting it on Saturday. Will show you a pic. Thank you for the inspiration!

Yes, the floor is concrete and is painted with porch paint much the color of light brick. We painted the floor years ago. Everything was old and now looks new.

Jeanette, yet another question, because it is Saturday, so it's time. Is your glider made of wood? Mine is vintage , very old , saved at a yard sale, but is otherwise in perfect shape i.e. it STILL GLIDES lol. But the wear has taken its toll and I now change covers, make long pillows and throws for it. I'm done. I want Your porch!! So, after all that do you think I can spray paint a vintage wood glider? I was going to do it yellow.( again yours ) and hope for the best. Just curious as to ...»
what yours was made of??? Also loove the rocker, Again, mine is old , my great grandmothers. My sister had hers dipped etc. ( we have different budgets lol) Should I just go for it? I read how you did your rocker but what about the glider??Thanks so much for listening, so to speak.

The rocker and swing are wood...were mildewed (just old) so we cleaned them with a little soap and water and then wiped down with white vinegar. We were careful not to soak them. The rocker has a twisted paper bottom so we were VERY careful with it. The glider and 2 chairs are metal...sort of a sturdy wire mesh. When you say wood, do you mean slats or wicker? Both can be painted. You might want to brush wicker really well and then wipe it down. I do know it can be painted. If you ...»
think you need it, you can get spray kilz for a primer to seal the piece since it is old. If it is in really bad shape, just dust it, prime it and paint. I wish you luck and look forward to photo!

It sure is beautiful. I love your wrought iron painted in a chartreuse instead of the old traditional black. Everything looks so vibrant and happy.

Above your photo, is my Before photo, very hard to take pic with the plants in the way, but I think the furniture is somewhat visible. When it is painted I can take off the various covers etc. on glider. And the chairs are old maybe rattan club chairs. Hope you get some idea, as you were my inspiration. Also hoping to have an After photo soon. Thank you for inspiring a devout procrastinator!!! I have glider paint, white tho not yellow. I'm going tjo go for color in throw pillows. here's hoping.........

Thanks Tyler...I would have invited you to come sit on my porch, but the mother bird who had her family squatted in the bridhouse made so much noise when we went onto the porch, we gave in and went to the back porch, leaving them in peace! Then it got to 106 and we stayed inside. I look forward to cooler weather arriving so we can enjoy our porch! Hopefully nesting season will be over!

Lolly Jane, this was old furniture and it was so simple to create. In fact, everything is old but repainted, even the flower pots. We had a ball picking colors. Here is a photo of my plants in pots painted to match. Some of the plantings were cooked by the heat so this is the second planting in many of them! There was finally rain and some of the dirt has splashed out and made a mess.
