What to do with this cabinet?

Dee B on May 28, 2016Whether you dismantle it or not, paint it with two coats of a light almost white color. Sand lightly between coats with 220 grit paper. Remove the hardware and clean it and spray it with a bronze or peuter hue of 'hammered' metallic spray paint by Rustoleum, then re apply hardware. This piece finished will work in any room in your house. You could distress it by sanding off a little of the light paint or apply a darker glaze to give it an aged look. Good luck.Helpful Reply

Cyndie S on May 29, 2016Gorgeous huge piece if its real wood! I'd just remove the glass doors, clean it up, polish it to bring out the patina and wallpaper or fabric or paint the inside backboard. It's so versatile if you have the room to use it as is!Helpful Reply

Eroque022810 on May 29, 2016Depends why you don't like it and what you want to use it for. If it is a catchall then use it as an office space a get creative paint and all the stuff one needs. If it's in dinning room and is a built in then more likely to be solid wood so sand clean and stain light so it doesn't continue to suckered up more space than it actually does. It's like a black hole,I know I have had dark furniture and it sucks life out of room. If you want to use it for dining room dishes and such things as holiday linens then can you fit it all in bottom and just remove top? I guess first know how you intend to use it. I saw a photo of one converted to a coffee area if that's the one you are looking for it was on this site. Good luck.Helpful Reply

Gloria tulip on May 29, 2016If it is made of real wood, you have many options. If it is laminated wood, more power to you. I attempted to refinish laminated wood. The strip products would not affect the laminate. Possibly you can sand with 220 and then paint. Be sure to let us see the finished product.Helpful Reply

Samantha on May 29, 2016Thanks guys for the advice. Will do a bit of investigation on it. (It's at my grandparents place at moment and they're throwing it away) it's such a shame to throw good furniture away. A hoarder I am I guess.. But I would like to make it either something useful for my little girls playroom or a hallway thing (the bottom part anyways) so I guess, bit of sitting and staring at it is ahead of me. If I can't figure anything out useful for myself, good will can benefit from it... I hope..Helpful Reply

Linda Johnson on May 29, 2016If it's not real wood, you can paint it and wallpaper the back (on top) to give it some color. It looks like a wonderful piece of furniture with loads of possibilities!Helpful Reply

Jennie Lee on May 29, 2016If it's too big for your home, or too large to move, you may be able to make 3 pieces out of it: bookshelves from the top left part, a glass-front cabinet from the top right part of it, and a long console/storage/sideboard from the bottom part. It would not be hard to add more shelves to the top 2 pieces. You could take the doors off the bottom part and put baskets in it for storage. (I'm assuming there are shelves in there--?)Helpful Reply

Tamar Lundeen on May 30, 2016I took my hutch apart. I wanted a console type cabinet that Ballard Design sold but it was over 2K! I took off the doors, cleaned good and painted satin black. Then I went to TJ Maxx homegoods and found boxes with lids made from woven grasses in a med. dark color , natural. I used 4 in 2 sizes. My decor to make it personal but its hard to tell the dif. between mine and theirs. I love it. I can see you doing that with your cabinet. Since it was originally a 70's mediteranean style, I put the top in the pump house because I needed shelving there for chemicals. Happy camper.Helpful Reply
