Neither my daughter, nor my granddaughter wanted this little coffee table any more. So how could I not resist transforming it into a unique Art Nouveau Finger Swirl piece of art with Unicorn SPiT.
Old unwanted Oak Coffee Table
My first steps were to prep the little oak coffee table for a new life. It was disassembled and sanded and thoroughly cleaned with TSP to remove the old finish and grim.
Creating the texture for the Finger Swirl
Wanting to try my Prototype # 2 Shimmer SPiT, I mixed the Blue Shimmer and Midnight Blackness Unicorn SPiT together. Once it was mixed I poured the mixture in the center of the table. Wondering what I was going to do next, I just started swirling it around in various directions with my hands. I was in hopes to see something appear to give me a direction for my design.
Rose Art Nouveau Stencil
I created my Rose Art Nouveau Stencil with my Cricut Explore to help me add another layer of dimension to the table. See I can not draw a stick man and my only hope was to use a stencil.
Finger Stippling SPiT
The table top had several different patterns of wood grain and I noticed the center was basically shaped in pie sections. So taking advantage of the sections I placed my stencil within those quadrants. I used my finger to do a stippling technique to apply the Shimmer SPiT stain within the stencils
Adding details with General Finishes paint
Prior to painting the outer ring with General Finishes Lamp Black a quick coat of Watco Spray Lacquer was used to protect the Unicorn SPiT stain. Using MINWAX Hand Rub Gloss for a total of 5 coats was applied over the whole table top sanding in between coats with 400 Grit sand paper.
Art Nouveau Finger Swirl table
The beauty of Unicorn SPiT stain, it creates a 3D effect and so much depth to any project like no other product on the market. My one of a kind Art Nouveau Finger Swirl table was accented also with General Finishes Holiday Red paint for a pop of color.
